Most annoying thing about working in audio?

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

Not being able to listen to music whilst working! It is seriously something that people should not take for granted.

When I do get the chance I find myself listening to soundtracks more and more as I really think that is where the truly talented musicians and composers work these days. Don’t get me wrong, there are some fantastic artists (past, present and upcoming).

There’s one album that’s been a favourite of mine for a long while now. It’s called Final Fantasy VII: Voices of the Lifestream, it’s a collection of tracks selected from the fantastic FF7 soundtrack and remade in various genres using a variety of instruments and production techniques. Best bit about it? It’s entirely free! Check it out and download it here – http://ff7.ocremix.org/

My favourite track from has to be The Golden Ivories of Gaia which is a beautifully composed and perfectly put together piece of music that encompasses all the key tracks from the original soundtrack, played by a single pianist classically and opens with one of my favourite tracks of all time, Lifestream (also from FF7 OST http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9v7hx93IQM).
But I also have a soft spot for the intro of the remade One Winged Angel, the first ten seconds of the melody are recreated beautifully through chiptune which then slowly crossfades with the orchestra. It sounds brilliant.

Sound of The Week – Rusty Old Metal Hatch

Continuing on from last weeks sound, this sound is from the same abandoned machine. It’s from one of the metal hatches on the side of the vehicle. Got some great sounds from it.

The audio is recorded at 96khz/24bit so it’s a nice hi res file using a Rode NTG-3 hooked into a Sound Devices 744t which we rented for the library recording sessions. As usual, this is all entirely free, no royalties/credits/small print. Just use however you want within your projects be them professional or personal. It is available for download here – http://www.samueljustice.net/downloads/2011/07/METAL_HATCH_DOOR_LEVER_RUSTY_RING_HI_METALLIC_RODE_NTG3_SOUNDDEVICES744T_20110704.wav

Sound of The Week – Rusty Old Lever

Posted by | Blog, Sound of the Week | No Comments

When we were out recording at the quarry for the recent library (available now here http://samueljustice.net/?page_id=753) there were two unused, unserviced, rusted through ancient diggers sitting in the quarry. Of course, curiousity got the best of us and we went to see what kind of sounds we could make. One of the diggers (pictured below) had an old rusty hatch, and the lever for the hatch was just about moveable. When you twisted the lever it gave off a great reverberant metallic sound, which is this weeks sound of the week.
